The public of Sanghera, its surrounding villages, and also of Barnala had been feeling the need of rural Degree College since long at or near Barnala. In pursuance of these feelings and in order to meet this long standing demand, Gram Panchayat of Sanghera took up the initiative and donated some land for constructing a college. Accordingly a charitable trust, known as Guru Gobind Singh College Trust Sanghera was formed and registered in 1969. The donated land of the Gram Panchayat of Sanghera was transferred to this trust and Guru Gobind Singh College was established in July 1972 on the Barnala-Ludhiana Road at Distance of 2 km from Barnala. So, in 1984(REGD NO. KC/691-83-84) a seperate Managing Committee constructed to boost the college.Besides imparting instruction up to Degree level, the college also provides training in the National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme. Arrangements exist for all major and minor games for boys and girls in the college. In order to develop talents of the students,a number of cultural and literary societies have been formed in the college. It brings out its magazine, Patrika, once a year. The students of this college are eligible for the award of all types of university, government and other scholarship. The number of students on the rolls of the college, during 1977-78, was 101. Institute catering the need of rural and reserved categories students to uplift the literacy rate and healthy lifestyle in the surrounded rural area. Institute put great stress to impart the higher education among the rural students. As far as enrollment is concerned ratio of rural and reserved categories is quite higher as compare to the unreserved categories. Institute has better mechanism to mentor and sensitize the needs of the needy student. Remedial classes and learning content offered to needy student on the priority based, so that they can compete the modern competitive society. NSS and NCC units of the college performed outstanding role to enlighten the national character among the students. NSS unit of the institute grab the best college award with distinction from Punjabi University Patiala. Volunteers of the NSS every year represent the Punjab state for the National Parades in the North Zone.
